Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydro Whey Protein

How does this product compare to the best protein offered here for postworkout?

Whey overpriced. Get some 520 and you're good to go if you're not lactose intolerant. Or a wuss who needs flavoring.

My customers that have been shopping here for years can tell you that the MOST important factor when choosing a hydrolyzed protein is to know the molecular weight average. The WHOLE reason you are buying a hydrolyzed protein because it is pre digested by the manufacturer whom adds digestive enzymes to the protein during the manufacturing process to break the protein chains into smaller peptides. Of course then you want the smallest peptides possible. The body absorbs through its intestinal wall di and tri peptides or 2 or 3 amino acids linked together. Peptopro is the closest thing you will get to di and tri peptides. It has a MW average between 250 and 350 daltons. (i will get clarification on this). My other proteins list the MW average. the 520 has a mw average of 520 daltons (ie average of 5 amino acids linked together).

So the bottom line is that if a company doesnt tell you what the MW average is of its hydrolyzed protein you never really know the quality of the product. I could not find this information anywhere on their site nor on bodybuilding.com.

to be honest im a little surprised by ON launching this product without letting consumers know the MW average. ON is owned by Glanbia Nutritionals. Glanbia has some great protein researchers in their company, but i guess in this case, the boys in marketing didnt consult with the guys in research. And adding EXTRA BCAA's, wooooow, thats really cutting edge, (NOT!!). I would have thought ON would have come out with something a little better than this. For a second I was a little worried when I saw the ad in the mags saying they are coming out with this NEW protein supplement that is going to blow everyone away. This product is just pretty lame to say the least. I do like the name and packing though

Also...even the Pepto Pro is bitter. My question is how are they making a hydrolyzed protein supplement that they are marketing to a mass audience that is not going to appease the taste buds of most?

I don't know of very many outside of weightlifters or bodybuilders that are willing to tolerate the bad taste of hydrolyzed proteins.

I remember letting a roomate of mine smell some of my pepto pro once when he asked me what was the best protein for post workout and he nearly gagged.

I would be curious to know how Optimum masks the bad taste of hydrolyzed protein so that the average consumer is not going to be completely turned off by the taste.

But in all seriousness, forty bucks for two pounds? WTF?

Voodoo secret flavoring? Sugar added? Low percentage of hydrolyzed protein? Those seem to be the most likely options.

...they're not using peptopro, are they? Is peptopro a PF exclusive, or are you getting it from a company that sells it to more than one retailer (like iflex and krill oil... hahaha... krill oil..).

PP isn't a PF exclusive....

If they used any of those tactics listed above, then their ingredients list is a lie. The most likely answer is a low rate of hydrolysis (<10%).

why dont PF come out with their own mass market protein like that? wouldnt PF make way more money that way? i mean just look at the prices for all the proteins out there. N PF would have the highest quality.

Glanbia also bought a factory in China last year. It could be that the protein is Chinese.
