At that time you would think that protein powders were in its infancy. You have to understand that the protein industry is the baby of the food industry. Most, if not all protein manufacturers are really just food companies. Protein powders are by-products of food products. For example egg protein. First you start with the egg, that gets turned into several different egg food products, frozen eggs, ect. Then they make whole egg powder, yolk powder, and finally the LAST step egg white powder. As a food manfacturer you dont want to waste anything you want to expand your customer base as far as possible.
Same with Whey, probably the greatest success story for the dairy industry. Here you had a product (whey) that was not being used, then it turned into a huge industry.
So getting back to Rheo's protein. All that was available back then was whole egg powder and whole milk powder. There wasnt any egg white protein or milk protein isolate, soy, and we know there was no whey at that time. It was a phenomenal idea to make nutritional powder. But they could only use what they had available. Hell I dont even think artificial sweeteners existed at that time.
They did nothing to make this protein powder special. Everything included in the protein, such as protein subfractions was naturally occuring.
Rheo bought the powder from the Food companys and turned them into a "muscle builder". These food company's did NOT make any special manufacturing equipment to make these two powders. All the ingredients are really are food products that could be used for other things, which they are..
Most protein profile's, soy, egg, and dairy are pretty much all the same in terms of amino acid profile.
the whole "mother's milk" thing is bullshit. I wrote an article years ago on it. But to make a long story short. Milk is for infants and as the infant gets older the milk actually changes to gradually wein (sp) the baby off. Breast milk consists of mainly lactose and hardly any protein. Mother nature never intended a adult human to consume breast milk. The protein from animal sources is the best. You can find the article in my research section.
As far as people still "bragging" about this great formula, it really is just something to talk about on the boards. But as far as a sports nutrition product goes, making a protein powder out of whole egg, whole milk powder, and lactase caseinate (which really what the formula was) is really not a good idea. The lactose in the powder is going to rip you a new a-hole. And as far as colostrum goes, which is really just another outdated protein, the protein subfraction content can easily be surpassed by superplasma protein and maybe even TRI FX. Once again neither of these proteins existed back then, if they did they would have been sure to use them.
Nelson Montana, a great supplement guru, actually talks about this formula( Rheo's) in detail in the Bodybuilding Truth book. Nelson really likes the formula and theorized that fat is needed to help digest protein. but we'll save that for another day![]()
