IMO, this statement depends on what your goals are.

The makers of PeptoPro (a Dutch company called DSM) have years of research and real-world use behind this product. Their studies and real world results have shown that when it comes to hastening recovery, PeptoPro has a definite positive affect on achieving these results.

Building blocks for better performance

When athletes use PeptoPro® during and immediately after a workout, the pre-digested protein is rapidly absorbed. Amino acids can be delivered directly to muscles and to organs which require them.

During exercise, protein breakdown is larger than protein synthesis so, in fact, exercise normally results in a loss of muscle mass. This can be reversed by consuming extra amino acids. Because muscle protein consists of all 20 amino acids, each amino acid needs to be supplied to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is hampered and protein degradation may be promoted by the lack of only one amino acid, resulting in a higher loss of muscle mass. It is therefore important that protein supplied during exercise contains the complete amino acid profile.

Casein is considered to be one of the best sources of protein for muscle protein synthesis. It contains all amino acids in just about the ideal proportions. PeptoPro® contains the same amino acids as casein, the only difference being the size of the peptide chains: very long for intact casein, very short (mainly di- and tripeptides) in PeptoPro®.

When used during exercise, PeptoPro® not only reduces muscle protein loss, it even builds up muscle mass, as shown in a recent experiment. PeptoPro® therefore helps to reduce muscle damage, resulting in a higher and faster storage capacity for energy-containing compounds and a reduction of post-exercise muscle soreness.

Protein is not only used as building blocks for muscle growth, it also stimulates the production of insulin. Insulin is particularly important for recovery after exercise. It stimulates the formation of muscle protein and the uptake of sugars, such as glucose, from the blood into muscle cells. And in the muscle cell, insulin stimulates the formation of glycogen, the glucose store of muscles, which is an important source of energy during exercise. Thus protein, via insulin, helps to replenish muscles’ store of energy.

Glycogen stores are replenished slowly if no protein is consumed directly after exercise and may take 24 to 30 hours to recover fully to the pre-exercise level.Recovery can be boosted by the supply of protein directly after exercise, via the subsequent increase in insulin. Instant re-charging of energy reserves allows athletes to recover faster and to be in better shape for their next training or match.

Timing of protein supply is essential. The sooner protein is consumed after exercise, the better is an athlete’s recovery. So right at the finish line is the best time for a recovery drink containing not only sugars and electrolytes but also protein. Unpleasant consistency, texture and taste make consumption of intact protein difficult directly after exercise. And protein hydrolysates and free amino acids are too bitter to be easily consumed. Thus, for recovery drinks, PeptoPro® is the protein source of choice: its texture and taste make it easily drinkable and it rapidly supplies the body with the complete range of amino acids.

What Lyle has a problem with (and attempts to address) is the often-made extrapolation that taking PeptoPro post-workout leads to a greater increase in muscle mass then the post workout use of a whole protein. The maker of PeptoPro never makes that claim. They do state that using it will lead to increases in muscle mass (see underlined portion in the quote) but that's as far as I have heard them claim. I have never heard nor read of DSM proclaiming for the specific goal of hypertrophy, PeptoPro use is better than whole protein use. From my reading, the sight always seems to return to the basic claim that PeptoPro use improves the bodies ability recover more quickly post workout.

Personally I have loved the recovery-hastening effects of the product. My goals, however, are not "mass attainment" but "sculpting and maintenance". For that, PeptoPro gets two thumbs up from me.

What I dont get is why the meal contained 23 grams of fat. I mean come on isnt that alot of fat. Sure this would factor into the digestion rate of the proteins.

So the study showed that amino acids from the HC entered the muscle faster and caused a greater insulin spike.

Seems that Lyle Mcdonald also has a problem with Biotest, which seems if he is making references to studies and then says this product is shit because of this study make me wonder. Most likely Lyle Mcdonald has a beef with Biotest. I google Lyle Mcdonald and T-nation. Looks like he used to write for T-nation before. And guessing from this latest article he wrote, I highly doubt he is writing for t-nation anymore. Thus he is either disgruntled, mad at them, or something like that their. But whatever, its a good find by Lyle but if he didnt mention the biotest product I think it would have been better. But you can find more articles about hydrolyzed protein if you google.

So I would disagree with Lyle about his conclusion

However, the long-term effects on body composition and exercise performance remain to be determined.

Im still going to consume Peptopro postworkout. Its a fact that its digested faster than casein. Delaying amino acids to the muscle after a workout...I dont see the logic in using a casein

I am a little put off by the addition of fat to the study...I mean, fat in general when added to a meal is going to slow digestion down, right?

I have had good results with pepto pro and I tend to agree from personal experience (using it for the past two years) that my recovery has always been better using it than when not using it.

My take on this whole issue is that these short term studies don't tell us what we want to know. We need studies of much longer duration that look at body composition changes, recovery, and strength in experienced trainees over longer periods of time. Alan Aragon alludes to the need for this same issue when looking into the "fat burning zone" myth.

As with all research involving applied physiology, the highly mixed set of results is due to a wide variation of study designs in terms subject profile, dietary manipulation, energetic balance, and actual intensities used. Nevertheless, the body of exercise-induced fat oxidation research can be easily deciphered by stratifying it into 3 subgroups: Acute effect (during exercise & immediately after), 24-hr effect, & chronic effect (results over several weeks)

It's a good idea to have a mix of study protocols as they increase knowledge overall, but chronic studies will always be the studies that I look to for answers on this kind of thing.

DSM claims better recovery, but I would be careful not to assume that it refers to recovery from heavy eccentric exercise performed by bodybuilders. It looks like they are talking about recovery from cycling to exhaustion. This is much different than this study of a whey hydrolysate. Also, I noticed that they compare recovery results with a carbohydrate. I would want to see how it compares to a good casein/whey protein blend, casein alone and whey alone. My guess is that consuming a casein/whey blend (like in this study) before the exercise bout (say 1/2 hour prior) would match or exceed the results of PeptoPro.
