I don't think McCain's legislation will get a lot of support.

For one, the supplement industry throws a lot of money at some key Senators and that is guaranteed to kill a bill before it ever goes to a vote.

But, I could be wrong so we'll just have to wait and see.

1. The revolving door is not new, it's been known to those in the know since the 80's. It's the main reason natural bioagents get banned or suppressed, usually by committee members with agendas or financial ties to drug companies with competing drug products. 2. Unfortunately, the price of freedom is putting up with things you don't like. The alternative is having a cabal of lazy, stupid, unelected and corrupt bureaucrats make decisions about your health for you. The reality is likely to be no different for any European bureaucracy.

No decision has yet been made on testing methods, so you can't yet point to the positive list nutrients (specifically authorized and allowed by the EFSA, the European FDA) and their maximum allowed daily dose. The EU has 27-members, but the UK, Sweden, etc. like the US are liberal on limits; harmonization to more restrictive levels based on flawed testing methods would eliminate at least 4,000 jobs and 700 (out over 1000) mom and pop health food stores in the UK alone. The proposed testing methods are due to go into effect by the end of this year. I believe the major problem stems from using chemical toxicity standards for food-based nutrients. The restrictions could be so severe, you could be able to get more nutrients in junk food than would be allow to sold in a supplement! Some examples of the limits: 40mg/day for riboflavin, 17mg/day for niacin, 10mg/day for B6, 4mg/day of maganese, 1000mg/day for ascorbate acid (this should have been set to 333mg/day to be consistent with the method used for the other nutrients --- already a sign the beaucracy knows it is full of shit), no more than the amount of selenium in two brazil nuts per day, and no more than the amount of beta-carotene in two carrots per day.

4. Sweden and England are very liberal with supplement maximums. 40% of the British public uses supplements, the highest in Europe. Germany also has a world-renown herbal pharmacoepia and herbal medicine is accepted there. So I don't think people from these particular countries would necessarily be clamoring to buy supplements from the U.S.; it is the more restrictive EU countries that overregulate nutrients as drugs or have absurdly restrictive nutrient maximums. But also, aware individuals don't literally come here physically, they order online and get it delivered through the post But, ignorance is as ignorance does. One doesn't know what one doesn't know. Chicken and egg.

Senator McCain is just an idiot. But lots of bills are introduced just to quiet the constituents and/or for kickback purposes with no expectation of ever passing. But the long term agenda of the Codex Alimentarius is to harmonize the USA to Europe's limits and that is just not going to fly here if most of us have anything to say about it! So any movement even remotely in that direction is a call for action.

well then it boils down to plain old politics. Either its a one biz owner looking to make a donation towards a campaign for future help on a project design for low income housing in a rich neighborhood or a drug company.

to answer all the numbers that you posted to, the answer is simple bro. The supp industry was never a 2+ BILLION dollar industry 10-15 years ago. It grew so fast and since each company just followed some bullshit guideline, there was never a reason to change any laws or adding any funding for future oversight. Why would they? What company in thier right mind would actually add an illegal compound to a supp that some teenager would buy? What company would actually never really test the product to see what it would in fact do to a person 10 years from now? Guess what, well you know what. There are fucking dozens. Where are those companies now? Where did they go when the first ban came around? Where were they for the increase of supps to the original ban?

The companies who promoted these products and could give two shits less about what happens to the consumer (only if they got caught and faced fines or prison time did they care) sold them for a quick buck are the ones that brought us to this level. And now everyone is like, OMG this guy's an asshole for presenting a bill and the FDA is this and our gov is that.

There is a simple resolution to the politics of consumer protection and advocacy, and to put it quite bluntly, it is individual responsibility.

I have seen the incompetence of government sponsored bureaucracies firsthand for nearly seven years now. Self interest and politics inevitably contort everything. That may be cynical but it is a healthy dose of reality too. People should not rely on government to do for them what they can arguably do for themselves.

The key is to do as much research yourself and try to know exactly what you are buying and where you are buying it from.

With the internet, it is pretty easy to do research, as this thread illustrates.

As a postscript, I don't like people who sell stuff that could hurt an innocent consumer, but I also don't have a lot of sympathy for people who carelessly accept as gospel anything the government might put their stamp of approval or disapproval on and concurrently those who will buy crap without first trying to find out if it is in fact crap.
