The Window of Opportunity, what it means to me is that you have only a certain precise time to take advantage of a circumstance, and if you don’t take action during that time the advantage is lost. Sports supplementation focused around your workouts is all about taking advantage of this Window of Opportunity, let me explain. There is a common misconception that you build muscle during a workout. Quite the contrarey, bodybuilding or any form of training is a stressful catabolic occurrence. You do not build muscle when you workout. Muscles are actually being “damaged” when you workout, which is catabolic. A sure sign that your body lets you know that you just busted your ass in the gym and that you are walking around in a catabolic state is the soreness you feel the next day after working out. Soreness is caused by a few things but mainly from the inflammation from the muscle fibers being torn. But this soreness could have been reduced drastically or even avoided all together the day before and a few minutes right before the workout that made you that sore. The “few minutes” before working out, IS the window of opportunity. During this window of opportunity should be THE time for supplementation. So what kind of supplements do you use during the window of opportunity? If you’re like most everyday joe schmo bodybuilders, you go on the internet and look to see what everyone else is using or look through a bodybuilding magazine to see what to use. Of course you are hit with the advertising of supplements to take pre and post workout. The supplement companies are smart and they know that this window of opportunity is the best time for supplementation and they know that YOU are looking for a supplement to take pre/post workout. But what they also know is that selling the boring products that actually work wont cut it in the “snake oil” driven supplement world. Not only that but the profit margin of the products that actually work is not as nearly as high as the fancy name sounding products that you can buy from China. Thing like creatine ethyl ester, and various free form amino acids. Thus if you fish through the bodybuilding magazines and internet message boards, the common large marketing supplement companies have lead us to believe by taking preworkout nitric oxide supplements laced with creatine products pre and post workout that this will cause some sort of stimulating effect or something along the lines of “pumping” up the muscle. Usually these supplements are just fancy “kitchen sink” supplements (every new fad supplement you can think of throw into one product) with stimulants like caffeine and guarana in them to make you “feel” like you have energy and get stronger after taking the supplement. Unfortunately this is NOT what you want to use preworkout because none of these supplements have ever been proven to reduce the factors that lead to muscle soreness. As a matter of fact they just make things worse because the caffeine and amphetamines (a lot of supplement companies use different forms of stimulants to fool you into thinking you are taking something scientific sounding) are actually CORTISOL producing products! And secondly most of them are based on the fictional nitric oxide theory that after nearly 5 years on the market not one so-called single nitric oxide product has EVER been proven to be ergogenic in any university study!! Yet people still buy these products! Amazing!
Thus if you find yourself using one of these products during this window of opportunity now if the time to make change to something that will actually help you fight catabolism. Catabolism is a direct cause of your workouts. During your workout for example, when you are trying to rep out your heaviest weight you have ever done before to try to impress the attractive girl next to you on the pec deck machine, actually tear muscle fibers. The tearing causes inflammation which cause sorenss. Secondly your oxygen need is increased during training, this increases free radicals inside the body which damages the muscle cell. Lastly, the hormone Cortisol is produced by the body to help it release amino acids from the muscles to help it produce energy. This in a nutshell these are the FACTS about muscle soreness and catabolism following bodybuilding. And what is also a FACT is to combat catabolism we need carbohydrates, protein, electrolytes, and anti-oxidants.
Carbohydrates and protein is the most important supplements to use preworkout and post workout, (you should know this already) Carbohydrates “maintain higher levels of blood glucose, which slows the use of muscle glycogen and delays the need for the use of protein as an energy source”. Im not going to go into detail about carbs and protein because I want to get right into my two new supplements.
Taking pre/postworkout supplements actually began a while back with the use of BCAA supplementation and L-glutamine supplementation. Supplement companies knew that using something preworkout would definetly work and work well, but the problem was finding something besides a protein and carb powder. Thus they created BCAA tablets and amino acid tablets, all in free form amino acids, in the hopes that they would get rapid and superior absorption product, thus resulting in a dramatic effect on the body. In theory it is a great idea and still is believed by thousands, if not millions of muscle bound wanna be’s todays. It pretty much common knowledge that if you can feed the body amino acid some way or another awesome results would incur. Unfortunately, free form amino acids never panned out for reasons to be discussed later….
Well, what I did here was pretty much eliminate the use of BCAA and other L form amino acid supplement. (Gosh damn, I actually sound like that company that claimed to make whey protein obsolete!!) You see, BCAA supplements and L-glutamine supplements are nothing more than free form amino acids, that quite frankly, and I hate to say it, have NEVER been proven to be ergogenic because they are in the free form or single amino acid state, no chains. On the other hand, Di and tri peptides, two and three amino acids linked together on the other hand HAVE been proven to be ergogenic and have been determined to be absorbed by the body. Free form amino acids have never been. This leads into the first supplement to use during the window of opportunity, a product that will have an immediate effect in your body.
