Here's a preview of my newsletter that I am sending out this Friday. Its about my trip to the Arnold Classic.
Arnold Classic Recap.
I attended the Arnold Classic this weekend. For those of you who don’t know what the Arnold classic is it’s the biggest fitness, sports, nutrition, athletic, and bodybuilding show in the world. It’s held in Columbus OH. The last time I was there I think it was about 3 years ago. There are plenty of events that one can attend or participate in. In the past the biggest thing was the bodybuilding show, but now the Arnold Classic wants to be geared more towards families so things like gymnastics and other sporting events are more popular (from what I can see). The expo is the biggest draw though. The expo is held in a huge hall. The aisles get so crowded with people you can’t even walk. During the afternoon it’s nearly impossible to move and if you want a free sample of something get ready to stand in line for a long time. If a supplement company or whoever that is exhibiting is handing out free t-shirts you would think that they were handing out $100 dollar bills, its nuts. I go to the Arnold to size up my competition and to look at the pretty girls (just being honest). I want to see if my competition has come out with anything new, maybe a better protein, or a better carb, or a better supplement than what proteinfactory.com carries. I am also a fan of supplements. I wouldn’t be in this business if I didn’t have a love for dietary sports supplements, especially ones that can help you grow muscle. After walking the whole expo floor I could not find one new product. My friend from Russia, who owns his own supplement company in Moscow, came up to me and said this, “Hey Alex, how come all these supplements are the same with different packaging?”. That in a nutshell sums up the state of the supplement industry now. Not one single supplement company has come up with a new product. Supplement companies that gross 80 million a year cannot find a way to make anything new. My friend from Russia was exactly right. All you saw was preworkout and postworkout powders or pills with all the same krap in them. One after the next promising huge gains of muscle and mind-blowing pumps. But if you looked carefully at all the ingredients of each one of these products you will find that they are all just maltodextrin and dextrose with amino acids like L-glutamine and L-arginine tossed in. Or they have some sort of kitchen sink nutraceutical stack in them. Really I was disappointed. Personally I want to see new products. But unfortunately there was none to be had, except for one which I’ll reveal later.
My favorite booth was the “Up North Jerkey Outlet booth”. I was walking down one of the aisles and saw a big sign for “PETA” (you know the save the animals group). Well I was like oh shit, what are they here bashing whey protein and maybe promoting soy!”. So as I got closer I could tell that this was not PETA. Instead I read underneath the word PETA, people eating tasty animals. I thought that was really funny. I went up to the guy and said, “Hey, you haven’t been sued yet by PETA?”, he said , “Not yet”, I replied back, “I give you less than 6 months!!” hahaha. But anyway that was probably the most intriguing booth.
As for the girls went, 10 years ago every single booth had at least 2 or 3 strippers dressed up in less than nothing, now I could find only 1 or 2 booths with “booth babes” working. I expected that too because I saw the warning letter that the people running the Arnold Classic gave to exhibitors warning them that the Arnold Classic is now a family event and they don’t want to see any “booth babes” running around. And unfortunately it worked. I think one clothing company had a couple of strippers working and then the MuscleMag booth had like a fake “photoshoot” going on and if you got lucky enough you could pose up there with three girls in bikini’s or booty shorts. Strange shit always happens to me at these things. I went to take a piss out in the hallway bathroom. I went, zipped up and next thing I know a bunch of CIA type looking guys started to escort me outta the bathroom and into the hallway. Next thing I know, low and behold guess who comes strolling around the corner, ARNOLD!!. So I whipped out my flip video phone and quick took a shot (see picture)
In other weird stuff the Jana Tana booth took a topless girl and made her into a robot looking thing (see video)
Twin lab was making people jump rope to get a free sample, how cruel!
This company had the coolest clothing line http://www.silverstarnow.com/
Sylvester Stallone gave a speech
Robert Kennedy the boss at MuscleMag International was there and looked disturbing
Here’s some schmuck with a giant Mohawk
It was crowded
Monica Brant was there
Here’s a dirty old salesman selling some electronic device trying to hit on a young healthy girl
In conclusion the only bodybuilding supplement that was new was the Myo-T12. The only new protein product was the whey crisps. Other than that it was the same shit in a different package. I did get two free T-shirts, one from hmb.org and one from Chuck Liddells new supplement line called “Ice Man supplements. I got a bunch of pills to try, which I threw in the garbage. I drank a bunch of protein samples, all which tasted the same to me. I tried a bunch of protein bars, which all tasted like they did last year. At night I took my date and went to a steak house called Smith and Warensky’s in Easton OH. It was good and I had a $46.00 Kansas City Steak and some French fries. My date of course just had a salad.
